Feasibility study in Solukhumbu

A team consisting of representatives from OLE Nepal, the Department of Education (DoE) and Himalayan Health and Environment Services (HHES) visited the remote mountainous district of Solukhumbu to study the feasibility of expanding the OLPC project in the district. During the three-day visit from March 18 to 21, the team reached seven schools in Phaplu, Salleri, Garma, Khoriya, and Jaidu, and held an interaction programme for local stakeholders at the District Education Office located in the district headquarter, Salleri. The DoE team was led by Deputy Director Mr. Baburam Poudel who is also the government’s OLPC focal person. HHES was represented by its Chairperson Mr. Ngima Tendup Sherpa. All the schools and local communities showed a lot of enthusiasm in launching the programme in the district. The schools were assessed based on teacher capacity, local community support, physical infrastructure, networking possibility, and the availability of electricity. OLE Nepal’s network engineer Mr. Basanta Shrestha took coordinates of all the schools in order to design a plan to connect them using wireless technology. He also inquired on possible means to connect the schools to the Internet. E-Pustakalaya’s Advisory Board Meeting

The first meeting of E-Pustakalaya’s Advisory Board was held at the OLE Nepal Office in Sanepa. The board consists of prominent members from Nepali literary circles: Geeta Keshary, Chudamani Bandhu, Dhruva K. Ghimire, Rambabu Subedi, Vinaya Kasajoo, Bishwambhar Chanchal and Hiranya Kumari Pathak. Given that E-Pustakalaya is not just a repository of any and all materials, but specifically education-focused content, it was deemed necessary to have an advisory board to suggest worthy materials for addition as well as to review existing and other additions to make sure they fit OLE Nepal’s vision of creating a unique education-focused digital

Refresher training for teachers in Mustang

Feb 24-27, 2010 | Mustang

Refresher Training for Mustang district was held at Janahit Higher Secondary School, Jomsom. There were 42 participants, which included 36 teachers from the program schools and 6 officials from the District Education Office. The training was conducted jointly by trainers from OLE Nepal and National Center for Education Development (NCED). Also, Deputy Director of the Department of Education Mr. Baburam Poudel attended part of the program in Mustang. He collected feedback and suggestions from the teachers as well as the district officials and expressed a firm commitment to continue the effort to integrate ICT-based approach in Nepal’s education system.

Workshop for CDC Officials

A workshop was organized for CDC officials at Yalamaya Kendra in Patan Dhoka. The agenda was to update CDC officials on the latest content development happening at OLE Nepal and to get their feedback. Also on the table was a discussion about designing comprehensive courses, with detailed guides for teachers on integrating ICT into their regular teaching process. The aim is to help teachers understand the linkages between lessons- both e-paath and textbook- and the curriculum. The CDC officials present at the workshop were very receptive to the idea and gave useful feedback.

Teachers Training in 5 Districts

April 2009 | Dadeldhura | Kapilvastu | Kavre | Lalitpur | Makwanpur

Residential teacher training sessions for all program schools and officials from District Education Offices (DEOs) were held at the respective districts. OLPC XO laptops were then given out at each of the schools, to students as well as teachers and DEO officials. Approximately 2000 XOs were deployed.

Training of Trainers Workshop

A four day training of trainers workshop, the first part of OLE Nepal’s teacher training to integrate E-Paati (XO laptops) and OLE Nepal content in classrooms, was conducted at National Centre for Education Development’s (NCED) training center in Sano Thimi. This training was designed to train master trainers from the Ministry of Education’s teaching training body, NCED, for the first round of OLPC laptop deployment. The training covered a wide range of topics including IT literacy, classroom arrangement and management, challenges in using laptops in the classroom, maximizing use of laptops both at home and school, non-technical issues and their possible solutions and parents and community awareness.
